Watch out for these problems:

Problem One: The perfume is not immediately attractive

If the opening is harsh—chemical, cleaner-like, solvent-like, too flat, dull, or stale—then it fails. If the perfume has no clear, identifiable character, or creates confusion at first sniff, then it has failed.

Problem Two: The perfume has no clear theme

If your perfume smells like “a bunch of notes” and does not have a clear identity, then it fails.

Problem Three: Not bright or clear at the start

If your perfume has a muddy opening, a “brown” feeling, or a murky top where citrus/aromatics feel trapped or foggy, then it fails.

Problem Four:  A weak or undefined heart

If your perfume smells good at minute one and then becomes “nothing,” unclear, or very weak—if it turns generic quickly, or the heart feels thin, hollow, or unstable—then it has failed.

Problem Five: A rough, sour, or messy base

If your perfume develops scratchy woods, bitter or dirty musks, or a “cheap amber” scent after several hours, then the base has failed. Watch for sourness, sweatiness, or a strange lingering harshness.

Problem Six: The perfume shouts instead of projecting

If your perfume is piercing, nasal, headachey—loud but not beautiful—then it has failed. If it radiates aggressively but feels thin, it fails. If it projects without feeling rounded, it’s often brute-force impact without polish.
